A New Home

A Boy
Middle of the year
5th Grader.
A new home
A new school.

My dad had changed jobs to relocate us back to our home state of Mississippi. So, we moved from Florida (the second time) to a town where we had not lived before – in January.

When school resumed after the Christmas holidays, my mom took me to my new school. We went the principal’s office, mom gave them my information, and someone walked me to my my new teacher and her class already in session.

In that school, you entered each classroom from the back. The door, and the aisle to the front, was between the first and second rows to the right of the room (or stage-left for the teacher). My escort and I stopped in the doorway, and she said, “We have a new student.” Each student in the room turned around and looked at me as my escort left me standing there alone.

I remained briefly in that solitary position wondering what to do next. Then suddenly, a boy sitting in that first row to the right, stood up, walked back where I stood, took my trench coat, hung it on a rack, and led me to an open seat in that first row.

As of this date of writing this down, this happened almost 55 years ago … and each time I tell this story, and as I capture it in writing, tears come to my eyes.

It’s about time I wrote it down!

Thank You Steve!

Peace Betwixt

One’s desire is this.
One’s intent is that.
And between the two
is Desire & Intent
two becoming one.

Masterfully you allow
the overlap of this and that.
So doing, you make peace.
To experience fully, natural.
To love deeply, intentional.

Peacefully, a teacher born.
Purposefully, a teacher lives.

Alive in the space of overlap
teaching us to feel
teaching us to hear
teaching us to see
our almond of peace
in the overlap
of our this, our that.

Lovingly, rhythmically, our hand you take
pulling us into the tension,
into the reality of paradox
feeling, hearing, seeing with us
the impact of peace between.

Graceful Tension

Anyone who said it easy
to forgive another
by another to be forgiven,
did not grasp
or let go,
the tension of the space
the hold of such grace.

And there you are, standing
quietly, openly, and lovingly
in that graceful tension.

To stand, effortless you know
it certainly is not
there in presence, often taut,
but there you are
by choice,
for us holding gratitude and generosity, the two
because first, they both were given to you.

But steadfast remain, those we need
like you, powerful with love
empowering us in impartiality.

Your desire encouraging, your intent inspiring
leading us simply
your Trueness, and mine, an equalizer,
forgiveness a relief
to suffering,
and together then, each paradox we live,
and presently, in presence, to each other we give.

Soul to Soul

Soul to soul, a connection made,
once made, one soul, an agent becomes,
and from his agency, soul to soul we stand.

We stand on purpose
and on purpose we stand,
individually, collectively,
propelled by desire, protected by intent;
finding Trueness firm in the two between.

Watching, a pleasure, seeing purpose
flow from you, one to many, many to one.
The tension you hold, a creative discipline
resolute in service,
determined to love.

Your desire, the fire
from which everything ignites,
for the many, for the one.

Your intent, the imprint
of who you are,
on the one, on the many.

Privileged to witness
such true aim
guiding the vessel of impact,
holding fast a trajectory of purpose,
colliding into a work of love.

Individually we understand, and privileged jointly,
we navigate the light and dark mystery
of soulful journey.

Rhythmic Participation

Of all I have done
and all I could do
the most loving thing
I know how to do
is to encourage
another human spirit.

And this is why I gather,
my energy to build and store
material I need
to continually be
creatively encouraging.

And this is why I give,
my energy released
through a life-giving and non-judgmental
way of being
with another spirit.

And this is why I grow,
my energy maintained
to gather and give
yet again
and again.

So yes, grow
is first about me
in order to remain
open enough to participate
in the growth
of the other.

Desire & Intent – All I Need

By what am I driven?
Passion.
By what am I drawn?
Purpose.

What energy desire exerts
I am pushed out.
What power intent beams
I am pulled forth.

Driven out
Drawn forth
desire and intent collide,
strength and weakness
paradoxically one.

In such oneness
passion speaks unashamedly.
In such oneness
purpose speaks clearly.
In such oneness
presence speaks consistently.

True now to who I am
what I need evident.

What I need
Yes, what you need
residing already, right here
where I stand
where you stand.

Shadow Strengths – Chapter Two (Desire & Intent)

In our country’s history we once said, “The United States are … .” We now say, “The United States is … .” Somewhere along the line of history it all became one. The desire of a people intersected with the intent for liberty and created a singular union. This union is not without its tension. And that’s okay.

Desire & Intent is a singular gift hidden in our shadow.

We, in our western society, for some reason see tension as bad. Indeed there is a level of stress that, over time, causes all sorts of ills−or at least takes blame for these ills. And there is a degree of tension that is the energy of human equilibrium.

The gift of tension is created by the powerful union of the desire that drives us and the intent that draws us. The union of desire and intent−becoming Desire & Intent−brings a key strength out of the separateness-created shadow: Creative Tension.

I will allow my own Desire & Intent to be the illustration. Where I am given the gift of connection with you, this is my story of purpose: My Desire & Intent is that you lovingly lead others to their own authentic confidence as you embrace the power of who you are and act on this Trueness!

The rhythm of this story is the pulse of purpose for me. In order to honor the flow, I have come to see and embrace the universal strength of creative tension in the shadow of my desire and intent. As I learned, internal desire and external intent seem to stay separated in our culture; maybe even in opposition as they seem like contradictions. However, they become one as they intersect in a spoken, conscious presence.

My own Desire & Intent speaks to my purpose (why I do what I do). And in the collision of the desire that you embrace your authenticity and the intent that you lead others to do the same, I am thrown into the creative tension of how I do what I do. All I do−coach, write, facilitate−flows through the creatively tense portal of my belief that I can encourage your confident Trueness. This is the energy of my balance. This is my Trueness acted upon.

Acting on your own Trueness, from the partnership of desire and intent, strengthens you to confidently explore what is in the shadow. The shadow strength of creative tension is leveraged in the balance of internal and external when you hold together your desire that drives you from the inside and your intent that draws you out.

The tension delivered to you by the collision of desire and intent is creative because it forces you to hold together what you see as reality and possibility; and in the holding you are opened to the how you do what you do.

“Our intention is not to conquer the shadow, but to draw it out into the light of our awareness and compassion.” −Richard Rohr
